U2K and Us

U2K=Universal Health Care in 2000

 by Patricia Dowds, PhD

On June 13th Dave Byrom and I attended the first Steering Committee Meeting of U2K in Washington as representatives of NCMHPC. We are now on this Steering Committee.  The Coalition and U2K share the same goals for high quality health care reform and have formed an alliance. We will be approaching all supporters of RHCD to elicit their support for fundamental health care justice.

The main premise of the U2K Campaign is that it is now possible to make real strides towards health care justice. It is clear to the majority that managed care makes profits for the few at the expense of the many. The majority is, when asked, advocating for qualitative change in our health care system. U2K believes that big strides are possible, but only with a good approach. They do not want to get bogged down in policy debates, payer discussions, focus on differences. THIS IS A FOUNDATION MOVEMENT. They want to build a strong, unified group for a multi-year campaign. They want to get a coordinated movement both inside congress, and outside in the nation. They want to get everyone to the table.

The U2K Campaign started with three goals:

1. Increase the political visibility of fundamental health care reform nationwide.
2. Strengthen local health care coalitions and create new linkages with organizations concerned about America’s health care crisis.
3. Help create an energized bloc of universal health care supporters in the next Congress.

Currently they have built a network of Health Care Justice Groups, Faith Groups, Labor, Disability Organizations, Seniors, and a beginning with Professionals. There is a developing group of Congressional aides.  They are not yet a caucus, but they show a broad interest and growing involvement. The U2K campaign has made real progress in its nine months of existence. It is well on its way becoming a strong Universal Health Care Task Force.

The Goals will be:

1. Ensure 100% health care coverage and access to health care that’s affordable and high quality.

2. Create a health care system that’s in the best interests of patient’s.

3. Allow doctors and other health care Professionals to provide quality care to patients.

4. Eradicate disparities in our health care system, in particular those impacting the African American, Hispanic-Latino, and other communities of color.
