Rumor Alert: |
- Too often
practitioners learn of coming changes only by chance.
Anthem – CA Blue Cross may be planning, as
of Jan 2010, to manage all out patient mental health
services. The word is they will only authorize 12
sessions to any provider (in or out of network), after
which, providers will have to submit treatment plans.

Important Reading: |
- The National
Coalition of Mental Health Professionals and
Consumers is the first and only mental health
organization devoted solely to advocating for
access, choice, privacy and quality for mental
health and substance abuse care. Any consumer of
mental health care can join the organization for
free; we ask mental health professionals to
contribute financially to the organization. While we
continue to advocate at the grassroots and policy
level (with organizations such as the Mental Health
Liaison Group and Universal Healthcare Coalition
Network [UHCAN]), we need the support of mental
health professionals across the country to join us
in fighting for reform in mental health treatment
and reimbursement for treatment. As I am also sure
you realize, while healthcare in general has been
whipsawed by the confluence of managed care, Big
Pharma, and the insurance lobby. Talk therapy,
psychotherapy, depth therapy, of whatever
description or persuasion has been particularly hard
hit. While there will be efforts in Washington and
in the individual states to address these issues,
and there is more hope that this will occur than in
years past, we need to make sure that mental health
and substance abuse care, especially psychotherapy,
is "at the table" in any discussion. Please ask
colleagues and friends to join us in this effort.
